Start a remote support session on Linux

Download, extract, and run the ThreeBIT remote support client on Linux, with notes on X11 and Wayland display servers.

This guide shows you how to start a ThreeBIT remote support session on Linux. We ship a portable .tar.gz build that runs on most modern distributions without installation. For the bigger picture of what happens during a session, see How ThreeBIT remote support works.

Before you start

  • Have a ThreeBIT technician ready to connect by phone or email.
  • Note which display server your desktop uses — most distributions offer X11 and Wayland sessions. Remote control behaves differently on each (see the note below).

Step by step

  1. Download the archive. On the support page, open the Remote support client section and click Linux. Accept the remote support terms, and AnyDeskClient.tar.gz will download.

  2. Extract it. Unpack the archive with your file manager (right-click ▸ Extract), or in a terminal:

    tar -xzf AnyDeskClient.tar.gz
    
  3. Run the client. Open the extracted folder and launch the client executable, or run it from the terminal:

    cd anydesk*
    ./anydesk
    

    If your distribution reports a missing library, install the package it names through your package manager and try again.

  4. Read your connection ID. When the client opens it shows a numeric address (your ID). Read this number to your technician or send it by email.

  5. Accept the connection. When your technician requests the session, click Accept, and confirm the screen-share prompt if your desktop shows one.

A note on X11 and Wayland

For security, Wayland restricts how applications capture the screen and inject keyboard and mouse input. As a result, full remote control is most reliable on an X11 session. If we find that control or screen sharing is limited, the simplest fix is to log out and choose an X11 / Xorg session at the login screen (usually via a gear or settings icon), then start the client again. We will guide you through this if needed.

During and after the session

You can watch everything on screen and end the session at any time from the client window. Because the build is portable, "uninstalling" is just deleting the extracted folder — nothing is left behind on your system.
